Subway Allergen Information
Subway is built to order, which is exactly what makes the Subway allergen menu harder to read than a fixed one. The same sub can be safe on one bread and not on another, so the useful question is never "does this sub contain milk" but "does the version I am about to order contain milk".
This page explains how Subway UK allergens are published, what the 14 named allergens are, and which of your choices at the counter move the answer most. It does not reproduce the Subway allergen chart, because a copy would go out of date and a wrong allergen table is worse than none at all.
Before You Order
Three things worth knowing before you look anything up.
The chart is per ingredient
Subway publishes allergens against individual ingredients, not against finished subs. You read down your own build: bread, protein, cheese, salad, sauce.
Your choices change it
Bread and sauce are where most allergens enter a Subway order. Two people ordering the same named sub can end up with different allergen profiles.
Nothing is free from
Everything is assembled on shared surfaces with shared utensils, so Subway does not describe any item as free from an allergen. If your reaction is severe, that matters more than any chart.
The 14 Named Allergens in the UK
UK law requires food businesses to declare these 14. Any allergen chart you read in a Subway, or anywhere else in Britain, is organised around this list.
| Allergen | Where it usually turns up in a sandwich shop |
|---|---|
| Cereals containing gluten | Bread, wraps, some sauces and coatings. Wheat is the one to watch at Subway. |
| Milk | Cheese, mayonnaise based sauces, some breads and cookies. |
| Eggs | Mayonnaise, omelette fillings, some breads and glazes. |
| Soya | Cured and processed meats, some breads, some sauces. |
| Sesame | Breads and toppings; also a cross contact risk from shared surfaces. |
| Mustard | Sauces and dressings, often where people do not expect it. |
| Celery | Stocks and seasonings inside sauces and soups. |
| Sulphur dioxide and sulphites | Pickled items, some sauces, dried ingredients. |
| Peanuts | Rare in savoury builds; more relevant to cookies and sweet items. |
| Tree nuts | Cookies, particularly the macadamia ranges. |
| Fish | Not typical in a Subway build, but declared where present. |
| Crustaceans | Not typical in a Subway build, but declared where present. |
| Molluscs | Not typical in a Subway build, but declared where present. |
| Lupin | Occasionally in bakery products. |
The "where it turns up" column describes sandwich shops generally, to help you know what to look for. It is not a statement about any specific Subway ingredient. Only Subway's own chart can tell you that.
How to Read the Subway Allergen Chart for Your Order
The reliable method takes about a minute and works in any store.
- 1
Say it before they start
Tell the person building your sub about the allergy before the bread is chosen. Once salad and sauce are on, they cannot undo it, and a fresh start is easier at the beginning.
- 2
Ask for the allergen folder
Every UK store keeps the Subway allergen chart available on request. Ask for it by name and read your own build down the list rather than trusting a summary.
- 3
Check the bread first
Bread is the single biggest allergen variable at Subway. Deciding it first narrows everything that follows.
- 4
Treat the sauce as an ingredient
Sauces carry milk, egg and mustard more often than people expect. A build that looks clear can change entirely at the last step.
- 5
Ask about a glove and utensil change
For a serious allergy, ask directly. Staff can change gloves and use clean utensils, but they will not know to unless you say so.
Why There Is No Subway Allergen Chart on This Page
Plenty of sites publish their own Subway allergen chart as a grid of items against allergen columns. We have chosen not to, and the reason is worth stating plainly: those tables assume a default build that most real orders do not match. Change the bread and the gluten answer changes. Add cheese and the milk answer changes. Pick a creamy sauce and both egg and milk can appear. A table that is right for a plain build and wrong for yours is not a helpful table.
What we do publish is real: full nutrition figures from Subway's official UK data, on every item that has them. Calories and salt do not depend on a serving decision in the way allergens do, so those numbers hold up.
If you want an authoritative allergen answer, it comes from Subway itself, in store or on their own site, for the exact build you intend to order. That is a short conversation, and it is the only version that accounts for what actually goes in the bread.
Subway Allergen Questions
Yes. The Subway allergen menu lists allergens per ingredient rather than per finished sub, which is the right way round for a build to order menu. Every UK store keeps it available on request, and it is on Subway's own site.
Ask for it at the counter in any UK store, or read it on Subway's own site before you go. We deliberately do not republish the Subway allergen chart here: a copy would fall out of date, and it would still be wrong for most real orders, because your bread, cheese and sauce choices change the answer.
The 14 named allergens required under UK law, listed in the table above. Subway UK allergens are declared against each ingredient rather than each sub, so which ones apply to you depends entirely on what goes into your build.
Availability of a gluten free bread varies by store and changes over time, so this is a question for your own branch rather than a page like this one. Note that even where a gluten free option exists, Subway does not describe it as free from cross contact, because everything is assembled on shared surfaces.
Ask and they generally will, along with using clean utensils. Staff will not know to unless you tell them before the build starts, so say it first rather than at the till.
The cookie range includes macadamia varieties, and all of them are handled in the same environment. For a nut allergy this is a case for reading the chart in store rather than working from item names.
Not automatically. Items Subway marks vegan contain no dairy as an ingredient, but they are prepared alongside cheese and mayonnaise based sauces on shared surfaces. The vegan and vegetarian list tells you what is marked; it does not tell you about cross contact.
The nutrition calculator holds Subway's official UK figures for calories, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, fibre, protein and salt, and lets you total a whole meal rather than a single item.
