Is Subway Halal in the UK?

Some Subway stores in the UK are halal certified and many are not, and there is no way to tell from the brand alone. This page explains why that is, and how to get a definite answer for the branch you actually intend to visit rather than a general one that might not apply to it.

Why the Answer Varies by Store

Every Subway in the UK is a franchise. The person who owns the shop decides what it stocks, within the range Subway approves, and halal certification is one of those decisions rather than a national policy. That is the root of it.

Across the 1,808 UK stores we track, sourcing is not a field Subway publishes in its store directory, which is why this page does not give you a number or a list. Any site that publishes one is either working from an old press release or guessing, and both go stale without anyone noticing.

A certified store generally sources halal meat for some or all of its meat range and displays the certification in the shop. A non-certified store does not, and the two can be a few streets apart.

How to Check Your Own Branch

Ring the store. It is the only method that gives a definite answer, and it takes a minute. Every store page in our locator carries a direct phone number for the branch rather than a national line, which is exactly the situation those numbers are for.

If you would rather not ring, look for the certification displayed in the shop. Certified branches generally show it, because it is the reason a good part of their custom walks in. An absence of signage is not proof either way, but combined with a quick question at the counter it settles it.

Ask specifically rather than generally. "Is this store halal certified, and which meats does that cover" gets you a useful answer; "is Subway halal" gets you whatever the person on the till has heard.

What Certification Does and Does Not Cover

Certification concerns the sourcing of the meat. It is a separate question from preparation, and worth understanding as two things rather than one. Subway builds every order on shared surfaces with shared utensils, so a certified store is making a claim about where the meat came from rather than about what it has touched since.

If that distinction matters to you, it is worth asking at the counter about glove and utensil changes as well. Staff will generally accommodate a request; they will not know to unless it is made.

The vegetarian and vegan items are a separate route entirely. Subway marks vegan items (Ve) or (VE) and vegetarian items (V) on its own menu, and the marked list is on our nutrition page. The same shared-surface caveat applies to those.

Why This Page Has No List

It would be easy to publish a table of halal Subway branches, and several sites do. We have not, for the same reason we do not publish a per-item allergen table: the data changes, we have no authoritative source for it, and a wrong answer on this particular question is worse than no answer.

A store can gain or lose certification, change owner, or change supplier without anything on the internet updating. Someone travelling to a branch on the strength of a two year old list is exactly the outcome to avoid.

The phone number on the store page is the source that is current by definition. That is the recommendation, and it is the only one we can stand behind.

Is It Worth It?

The honest answer is that it depends entirely on the branch, and one phone call settles it in a minute. Certification is a franchisee decision rather than a Subway UK policy, it can change, and no published list stays accurate. Ring the store using the number on its page here, ask specifically which meats the certification covers, and ask about utensil changes while you are on the phone if preparation matters to you as well as sourcing.

Is Subway Halal in the UK? Questions

Some branches are halal certified and many are not. It is a decision made by each franchisee rather than a national Subway UK policy, so the answer is specific to the store you plan to visit.

Ring the branch. Every store page in our locator carries a direct phone number for that shop. That is the only source that is current by definition; published lists go stale without warning.

Because we have no authoritative data for it and the status changes. A store can gain or lose certification or change supplier without any website updating. On this question a wrong answer is worse than no answer.

It concerns the sourcing of the meat. Subway builds every order on shared surfaces with shared utensils, so preparation is a separate question. Ask at the counter about glove and utensil changes if that matters to you.

Yes. Subway marks vegetarian items (V) and vegan items (Ve) or (VE) on its own menu, and the marked list is on our nutrition page. The shared preparation caveat still applies.

That depends on the branch, exactly as the rest of the meat range does. Ask the store specifically which meats its certification covers, because it does not always cover all of them.
