Guide Who Owns Subway?

Subway spent almost sixty years as a private company owned by two families, which made it one of the largest privately held restaurant chains in the world. That changed recently, and the UK stores you actually walk into are owned by someone else again.
The Founders
Subway began in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, when a seventeen year old named Fred DeLuca borrowed a thousand dollars from a family friend, Dr Peter Buck, to open a sandwich shop. DeLuca wanted to pay for medical school. The shop was called Pete's Super Submarines.
The name became Subway a few years later, and the company began franchising in the mid seventies. That decision is the reason there is a Subway in almost every British town: franchising let the chain expand faster and with less capital than a company owned model would have allowed.
DeLuca ran the business until his death in 2015. Buck, who had put up the original stake and stayed a co-owner throughout, died in 2021. Between them they held the company privately for over fifty years.
Who Owns Subway Now
Subway was acquired by Roark Capital, a US private equity firm, in a deal announced in 2023 and completed in 2024. That ended the company's long run as a family held private business.
Roark holds a large portfolio of restaurant and franchise brands, which is the relevant context: Subway moved from founding families into a firm that specialises in exactly this kind of multi-brand franchise ownership. The founding families' involvement ended with the sale.
For customers the change is mostly invisible at the counter. Ownership at that level affects strategy, supply agreements and the terms franchisees operate under rather than what happens when you order a sandwich.
Who Owns the Subway You Actually Visit
This is the part that matters more day to day, and it surprises people: almost certainly not Subway. The overwhelming majority of Subway stores worldwide, including in the UK, are owned and run by independent franchisees rather than by the company.
That is why the 1,808 UK stores we track carry 1,144 different weekly opening schedules between them, and why the most common single schedule covers only 2.4% of stores. Each owner sets their own hours.
It is also why prices differ between branches, why halal certification varies, and why one store stocks something its neighbour does not. When people say "Subway UK decided" something, the decision was usually made by a local owner rather than centrally.
What That Means for You
Practically, it means the store is the authority on anything specific. Opening hours, sourcing, stock, and whether they can accommodate a request are all local decisions, which is why every store page in our locator carries a direct phone number rather than a national one.
It also means prices on this site, or anywhere else, are a guide rather than a guarantee. Ours come from a reference UK store's collection menu and refresh on a weekly rebuild, which is stated plainly on every page that shows one.
And it means complaints go to the store first. A franchise owner can fix an order problem in a way that no head office can, and generally faster.
Is It Worth It?
Subway is owned by Roark Capital, a private equity firm, following a sale announced in 2023 and completed in 2024. Before that it was held privately by the DeLuca and Buck families from 1965. But the more useful answer for anyone actually eating there is that your local Subway is almost certainly owned by an independent franchisee, which is why hours, prices and stock differ so much from one branch to the next.
